The other day while searching for "umbrella" on Etsy I came across lauraamiss.
I fell in ♥.
Meet Laura. "[Her] work is often inspired by very ordinary things, proverbs and poetry. [She loves] simple lines and subtle colour combinations." I really adore her art, and I am sure you will too.
When did you first begin creating art?
I studied Textiles for my degree which I completed in London, I have always enjoyed making things but it has really been in the last couple of years that my focus moved to creating art pieces using embroidery and print. When I was a teenager I was constantly cutting up my clothes, remaking them, making bags and drawing.
What is your favorite or most sentimental creation and why?
Last summer I made this piece ''Little legs'', which really begun to change things for me. It is a very simple image but it produced an incredible response from people, which I hadn't expected at all. It was one of the first textiles canvases that I made by layering fabric together. It got chosen to be included in a calendar for 2010, so I suppose it boosted my confidence and enabled me to realise a new technique.
What people/places/things inspire your work?
I am really in to illustration at the moment and drawing forms a very important part of creating my work. I look at a lot of fashion illustrations from the 1950s to the present day, The titles of my work are important and I have been reading through lists of proverbs recently. I am passionate about color, often pieces can start with color rather than the image so a lot of inspiration comes from going through my fabric collection.
Is there a project you have always dreamed of creating?
What would it be? I love traditional textile practices such as cross stitch and tapestry, I would love to have the time and the patience to produce one of my images in the medium.
